Wheat is planted for many purposes including as a cover crop, for winter grazing, silage, hay and grain.

Having a crop such as wheat planted protects the soil from wind and water erosion, and can potentially capture more winter moisture due to the ground cover. Unfortunately it also is removing soil moisture during a time when many crop producers would prefer to be building soil moisture for next years crop.
